Installing the Pier Blog Plugin

To give the title of this blog justice: Here is a first screen-cast on how I installed the Blog Plugin on the running Pier server of this web site.

Hi Lukas, good to see you have started a blog! Regarding VNC, are you running a standard server on your unix box or RFB inside Squeak?

Hi Mike, thanks for the comment. I am using the RFB inside Squeak, that is much easier to setup and works faster than the standard servers.

Marvellous! This blog is exactly what I need. As a newbie, I tried to do my small blog on seaside like Ramon Leon. That teaches me a lot about Seaside but I missed something... I know today and it was Pier. Pier is really a great tool (the future CMS to replace Joomla or other PHP ones). I am fond of continuation systems (even if we need to add params in WAUrl not to get back to first page when session expires) and I thought there could be a good way to use session in the blog to permit user to re-edit his comment if he saves it but there is a mistake. I don’t know for instance how to do this but you probably do.

Hi Lukas. Great that you’ve started your own blog. As you might know I’m running an old version of SBlog, any ideas how I can migrate to Pier Blog? Thanks. Ian.

I guess you want to keep all your posts and comments ;)

It would certainly possible to create a script that migrates SBlog to Pier Blog. An important difference is that SBlog uses HTML for posts whereas Pier uses Wiki Syntax. So if you don’t feel like converting HTML Syntax to Wiki Syntax it is probably the best to create some sort of legacy subclasses for Post and Comment.

Can that wait for Camp Smalltalk? ;)

Thank you for all your comments:

  • Martial Boniou: Unfortunately using the back button to re-edit comments does not work right now, but that would be definitely nice to have.
  • Ian Prince: Since these are all objects migrating you existing posts and comments should be possible. However, Pier uses its own directory structure and therefor that will certainly look different afterwards.
  • Philippe Marshall: To reduce the long and boring time till Camp Smalltalk I suggest to contribute to the open repository at http://mc.lukas-renggli.ch/pier.html ;-)
